SPECIALISTS

Dr. Srikantha Herath - Director, Water and Climate

SrikanthaSrikantha has more than 40 years of experience in civil engineering, both in industry and in academia, specializing in flood risk reduction, urban water management and climate change and impact assessment, using mathematical models and spatial data. His most recent assignment was the development of a center for integrated flood and water management for Metro Colombo as the Team Leader of the project since 2016 July till 2020 June, Metro Colombo Urban Development Project funded by the World Bank. He also served as a Senior Advisor to the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development, Sri Lanka during that period. Prior to that he was Academic Director and Senior Academic Programme Officer at the Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability, United Nations University (UNU-IAS), (2002-2916), Associate Professor and Guest Foreign Professor at University of Tokyo (1991-2002), senior research engineer in industry, Tokyo (1988-1991). Dr. Herath holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Tokyo. Dr. Ashok Peris - Geotechnics

AshokAshok has over 25 years’ experience in the geotechnical consulting and research/academic fields. As a consultant, he has been involved in a wide range of geotechnical projects including site investigations; construction monitoring; road and rail infrastructure projects; foundation design and slope stabilisation. He has worked in Australia, Japan and Sri Lanka.

His working experience include Technical Director at GHD pty Lid, Australia, Coffey geotechnics pty Ltd Australia, (11 years), Sato-kogyo Co. Ltd, Japan as a project engineer (3 years) and  University of Moratuwa faculty (12 years). He has a civil Engineering degree from Moratuwa University, Sri Lanka, Masters from Imperial college in University of London  and PhD from university of Tokyo, Japan

Dr. Lal Samarakoon - GIS and Remote Sensing

LalLal has experience of over 30 years  in the application of spatial analytic techniques using GIS, remote sensing, and GPS in resource management for sustainable development through research, training, and real-world application. He has extensive knowledge in the application of Geoinformatics in various real-world applications such as regional planning, watershed management, coastal zone management, land use planning, healthcare planning, disaster mitigation and agricultural development with hands-on experience in Bangladesh, China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. He has been involved in consulting projects funded by ADB, JICA, World Bank, JAXA, RESTEC and UNDP and has played an active role in organizing and conducting over 30 short-term training courses for participants from various government agencies in Asia. Lal was attached to Nippon Koei Consulting Engineers of Japan for 5 years and steered Geoinformatics Center of Asian Institute of Technology for 15 years. Currently he is affiliated to Japan Space Forum, Japan as a Fellow and Director of Canasia Geoinformatics Solution Ltd., Canada

Dr. Jean-François Vuillaume - Weather and Climate

JeanJean-Françoishas extensive experience in weather forecasting, climate modeling and hydrology. His past experiences include Hydrologist, Tokyo University, Institute of Industrial Sciences (IIS), hydrology department and water resources engineering, Tokyo, Japan, Hydrologist at the Department of Integrated Climate Change Projection Research (IcliP) of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, JAMSTEC, Yokohama, Japan, Researcher in data assimilation and high performance computing for tropical weather forecasting at Ignitia S.A., Accra, Ghana, Petroleum reservoir engineering consultant STATOIL, Trondheim, Norway and Research scientist, CO2 Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) research project. SINTEF Petroleum Research, N-7465 Trondheim, Norway.

JanithaJanitha is a Mechanical Engineer who specialized in Industrial Robotics. He has a B.Sc. in Engineering (Mechanical ) from University of Peradeniya Sri Lanka and a M.Eng ( Mechatronics) from Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand

Kithma Wijesinghe - Coordination and Administration

KithmaKithma is a biotechnology professional with  extensive knowledge of computational biology methods, database design, and medical informatics and trained in universal laboratory safety procedures and data storage protocols.

She has a Bachelor degree in Biotechnology from Nilai University, Malaysia and a Diploma in Microbiology from The Open University, Sri Lanka

Muditha Dantanarayana (Part time) - Rainfall

MudithaaMuditha;s research interests are ground based real-time hydrometeorological observations using IoT, rainfall forecasting with WRF and satellite data assimilation for hydrology. Currently he is enrolled in a doctoral program in Civil Engineering at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. He has Completed BSc.Eng in Civil Engineering and MSc.Eng in Environmental and Water Engineering from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka and worked as a Research Engineer in Rainfall Analysis at the Center for Urban Water, Sri Lanka (Nov 2017 – Sep 2021).
